It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mark Royal, age 36 on Monday, May 15, 2017, surrounded by love. He was a man of strength, integrity, eternal optimism and perseverance.
Born in Glace Bay, Mark was the son of Walter (Irene) and the late Christene (Matheson) Royal.
Upon graduating from the Atlantic Police Academy in 2000, Mark began his 17 year career with the Cape Breton Regional Police, beginning on Patrol which led to the Street Crime/Drug Section and currently Detective Constable. He was an active community officer and volunteered his time whenever needed. Mark played a significant role in the annual Cops Against Cancer fundraiser, a cause that was near and dear to his heart. Also, while enjoying his career, he formed many amazing brotherhood bonds.
He was an avid sports fan, behind the bench and on the ice. He always enjoyed traveling to cheer on his favorite teams which included the Boston Red Sox, Colorado Avalanche and New England Patriots.
Mark is survived by his best friend and the love of his life, his wife, Melissa-Sue (Anderson), his furbabies, Chloe, Lexi and Zoe (“the girls”), sister, Terri (John Thomas), Moncton, NB, brother, Forbes (Tanya), Glace Bay, beloved Nana, Jean Matheson, Reserve Mines, proud and nurturing mother and father-in-law, Colleen and Poncho Anderson, brother (in-law), Ryan Anderson and chosen sister, Hilary Tompkins. Also surviving are cherished nephews, Jarrett, Austin, Ben, several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Besides his mother, Mark was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Forbes Matheson, paternal grandparents, Muriel and Walter Royal.
In honoring Mark’s wishes, there will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held 11am on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Warden United Church, Glace Bay. Rev. Dave MacLean, Rev. Carol Gillard and Lay Minister, Martha MacDonald officiating.
Please help us fulfill Mark’s wishes and join us in celebrating his life on Sunday, May 21st from 6-11pm at Flavor 19 (Lingan Golf Course). Come laugh, reminisce and make new memories.
The family would like to thank Dr. O’Brien and Crystal, Dr.’s , Ron MacCormick, Simon Walling, Anne Frances D’Intino, the nursing staff in the cancer center, ER and An Cala unit for their compassionate care.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in remembrance of Mark Royal Cops Against Cancer (Cape Breton).
