It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley McNeil, age 79, of Glace Bay, on Friday, December 1, 2017. Shirley passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Shirley was born and raised in Dominion, a daughter of the late Dan T. and Florence (Powell) McNeil.
Shirley was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.
She will be forever missed by her five children; Shirley(Barry) Cogswell, Joey (Debbie), Christina (Philip) Hall, Frankie (Patsy) and Bruce; grandchildren, Shaun (Stephanie), Jonathan and Kyle (April Ferris) Cogswell, Laura (Chris) King and Jeffrey (Jena LeBlanc)McNeil, Erica and Kristen Hall, Rebecca and Shea-Lynn McNeil, Maria Doucette and Landon McNeil; great grandchildren, Caiden King and Charlotte Cogswell; her sister, Lois (Albert) McLean; sisters-in-law, Gail and Linda; and many nieces and nephews.
An avid card player, Shirley enjoyed a good game of poker and was a member of a number of local bridge clubs. She was an active volunteer in the community, raising funds to improve the health of the community for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Glace Bay Community Hospital. She was also a member of the Catholic Woman’s League. Shirley also enjoyed her time singing with both the St. Anne’s and St. Anthony’s choirs as well as quilting at The Church of the Good Shepherd.
Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 48 years of marriage, and best friend, Joe McNeil; brothers, Mike, Rod ‘Hun’, George ‘Porky’, Earl, Wayne and Sheldon; sisters, Mary ‘Dit’, Florence and Christine and her granddaughter in infancy, Morgan Hall.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 5th from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home,16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held Wednesday, December 6th at 10 a.m. at St. Anne's Church with Rev. Anthony O'Connor officiating. Interment in St. Anne’s Cemetery followed by a reception in the church foyer.
A special thank you to the staff of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit and 4A Cape Breton Regional Hospital, VON and Home Care Services for their kindness and care during a very difficult time.
