Obituary of Ruth Ellen Poirier, New Waterford & Pictou
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Ruth Ellen Poirier (Barton). She died peacefully on March 13, 2023, surrounded by family at Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born on July 29, 1947, in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Ruth was the youngest daughter of nine brothers and sisters.
She is predeceased by her parents, Cleophas (Clo) and John Barton of New Waterford; siblings, Blair and Valerite Joan, John (Corky) Barton and Rita, Alfred Barton, Ray Barton and Rosie, Connie Webster and Jim Dickinson, Thomas Barton, and Cecil Barton.
She is survived by her doting and loving husband of 58 years, Fred Poirier of New Victoria, Cape Breton. Ruth was mother to Laura Poirier and Christine Bourdeau (deceased); grandmother to Kyle and Ryan; great-grandmother to Yuric, Ira, Shiloh, and Finnegan Bourdeau. Loved dearly by her extended family, Louise and Harold Dawe, Walter, and Rita Poirier (deceased), Dave (deceased) and Anita Poirier, Linda Poirier (deceased), Eileen and Harry (deceased) Montgomery, Hector and Rodena Poirier, Kathleen Barton (sister-in-law) and the endless lineage of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ruth’s love for her family was immense and her passion for cooking and entertaining has left a permanent mark on all the lives that had the opportunity to spend time in her company.
Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A celebration of her life will be held in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 1:00 pm followed by burial in Forest Haven Cemetery. Father Godwin Obike officiating. A Luncheon will take Place at the Army, Navy, Airforce Hall, Smith Street, New Waterford.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the palliative care team at the Aberdeen Hospital and Ruth’s medical support of Dr. Lum and Dr. Straub.
